Gemma Nuttall, Teacher
AIDTA(Bt)
I began my dance training at the age of 3 at The Gillian Garvey School of Dancing in Tottington, where I gained qualifications with the RAD and IDTA, training in Ballet, Tap, Theatre Craft, Greek, Song & Dance, National and Character. I also performed and competed with success in many local dance festivals and shows.
At the age of 9 I was accepted as a Junior Associate into the prestigious The Hammond School in Chester studying Ballet, Jazz and Musical Theatre for 4 years. Then at the ages of 13 and 14 I was nominated for the IDTA Awards in Tap.
After leaving school I attended Bury College to study a BTEC in Performing Arts Gaining 2 distinctions and a merit. Whilst there I took part in many shows and was appointed Dance Captain for our Final Performance, where I had to spend extra time with other pupils that weren’t dancers and found it more difficult than others to pick up routines and get them ready for our performance of A Chorus Line, this was a new challenge for me as I had many different types of people to coach. Also whilst I was at college we had many opportunities to choreograph dances and learn from other pupils, along with learning the basic skills of stage make up and design. Having these opportunities helped me cement my career choice to become a dance teacher.
Whilst studying I was also teaching at the Gillian Garvey School of Dance, working on the IDTA lower grades and also working closely with students to choreograph solos and duets for local Dance Festivals and competitions.
At 18 I was then accepted into the Royal Academy of Dance in London where I studied Ballet Education. This course combines the study of ballet and dance with teacher training so I gained an immense amount of knowledge and insight into becoming a dance teacher.
Since Sept 2010 I have been teaching at Dansworks Dance Academy and am now working hard towards adding to my teaching qualifications with a view to becoming an IDTA examiner one day.
